What are Ductless Heat Pumps?
Ductless heat pumps, also known as mini-split heat pumps, are heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork to distribute air. They are a type of air-source heat pump that can both heat and cool your home, providing year-round comfort.
Instead of ducts, ductless heat pumps consist of an outdoor unit that houses the compressor and an indoor unit that is mounted on a wall or ceiling in the room that needs to be heated or cooled. The indoor unit contains a fan and a heat exchanger, which extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it inside during the winter, and does the reverse during the summer to cool the room.
Ductless heat pumps are highly efficient and can be up to 30% more efficient than traditional heating and cooling systems, as they don’t suffer from the energy loss that can occur in ductwork. They are also relatively easy to install, as they don’t require ductwork to be installed, making them a good option for homes without existing ductwork or for retrofitting older homes.
Ductless heat pumps are also known for their quiet operation, as the indoor unit is typically much quieter than traditional heating and cooling systems. They can also provide zoned heating and cooling, allowing you to control the temperature in different rooms independently, providing greater flexibility and energy savings.
